Fabio Polenghi Court Case

fabio1On May 29th 2013, the South Criminal Court of Bangkok found that an Italian journalist and freelance photographer, Fabio Polenghi, age 48, was killed by a bullet that was fired from the direction of the security forces in the morning of May 19 2010 between 10:00-13:00 when troops began the “Area Reclaim” operation at Saladaeng leading up to Rachaprasong road. He was shot while he was running away from the troops as he took photos of the military operation against Red-Shirts supporters. His camera was also stolen right after he was shot.

Fabio Polenghi “Last photo” Exhibition

Fabio PSome of the last photographs taken by photo-journalist Fabio Polenghi, who was killed during the government crackdown on red-shirt protests on 19 May 2010, was exhibited at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand since the 18th of this month and it will be closing down for display this coming Thursday (30/5/13). This exhibition is to commemorate the last moments of Fabio’s life and his goodwill towards his fellow humans and justice through the photographs he had taken, Elisabetta Polenghi (Fabio’s sister) explained. Elisabetta said that it had taken her about a year to collect over 500 of Fabio’s photos and another 4 months to select 30 of them to be shown on the exhibition. She said that choosing the photos for exhibition was very difficult because it was like living Fabio’s life and understanding his last moments before he was shot, as she had not been with him at that tragic moment.

UDD President Tida Response on the “Shooting Birds in a Cage” VTR

At the UDD press conference on Wednesday May 22nd 2013, Assoc. Prof. Tida Thawonseth responded to Army Col. Winthai Suwaree’s comments on the VTR “Shooting birds in a cage” that was broadcasted on Asia Update TV Channel during the “Look Back and Glance Forward for Democracy” show.

The people’s response to the VTR has been positive, according to Assoc. Prof. Tida, but it was not popular among the high-ranking Army officers. The army deputy spokesperson, Col. Winthai Suwaree said that the details of the military operation on the VTR which was based on a column in an Army education magazine (Sena-Thi-Put April-Dec 2010 edition) called “Lesson Learned from Area Reclaim Operation: Rachaprasong area, May 14-19 2010”, written by Col. Boonrod Srisombut, was only his personal opinion on the situation and has nothing to do with Army’s point of view on the events that transpired in May 2010.

UDD Press Conference 22/5/13

IMG_0384On Wednesday, May 22, 2013, Mr. Thanawut Vichaidit, showed his appreciation to the Red Shirts supporters that joined the rally last Sunday at the press conference of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). Although the main rally went by without any major incidents, unfortunately, two Red Shirts supporters had died.

An elderly women who was later identified as Mrs Khaikee Wongrasri, died of a heart attack just before the rally began in front of Wat Phrathum Wanaram. Another supporter who was later identified as Mr. Supharp Gumchart, died from a car accident while traveling to the rally. We would like to show our deepest condolence to the family of the deceased and we would like to show our sincere gratitude for their undying support for our cause.

80 Million Baht Bounty

thaksin10 million baht is a large sum of money that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra have been waving around as a bounty for anyone who can provide evidence for the people who were responsible for the burning down of the Central World department store on 19 May 2010. Thaksin made the announcement for the bounty in front of 100,000 Red Shirts supporters at the three years anniversary event last Sunday (19/5/13) and less than 24 hours later; Thaksin again announced that the bounty will be increase to 10 million baht per culprit instead. This means that if your evidence can convicted five of criminal who burn down Central World, you will receive 50 million baht.

UDD Statement on May 19th 2013

At the event “19 May, To Commemorate the Heroes and the Call for Justice” on Sunday, the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) “Red throughout the land” issued a statement to explain why more than 100,000 thousands (an actual figure from our registration records) of Red Shirts came out en masse to commemorate the fallen heroes who so unjustly died 3 years ago and to state the UDD position on four issues:

“19 May, to Commemorate the Heroes and Call for Justice”

On Sunday May 19th 2013 from 10:00pm onward, the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), Red throughout the Land, is holding an event “19 May, to Commemorate the Heroes and Call for Justice” in honor of our fallen brothers and sisters of democracy at Ratchaprasong intersection, Bangkok.

The UDD would like to invite all Red Shirts supporters to come and pay tribute to the 98 lives that were lost and to remind their families that their sons’ and daughters’ heroic acts have not been forgotten.  On the 19th there will be an exhibition of photos along with narration and a collection of video recordings of the tragic incidents that happened 3 years ago. Co-leaders of the UDD will give speeches throughout the day.  Entertainment on that day will be music and other performances provided by our brothers and sisters from every corner of Thailand. Co-leaders will also march with a small contingent of supporters to Wat Pathum Wanaram to leave flowers and wreaths as a mark of respect for the fallen.
